Introduction
Istari Digital® Internet of Physics™ platform
Istari Digital is a platform that enables users to upload, view, and share documents, as well as collaborate more effectively, in a way that is particularly useful for organizations that are concerned with security. A key concept to understand is that while it’s easy to use Istari Digital simply as a very powerful file-sharing system, the real power of Istari Digital happens when certain types of files are uploaded, which Istari Digital can manipulate in powerful ways. An example is when a user uploads a CAD file that Istari Digital then decompose into a set of images.
Extracting Artifacts From Models (Decomposing Files)
Decomposing a file into smaller parts is also called Extracting an Artifact from a Model. Not all files have something to extract — for example, an image doesn’t need to be decomposed any further to be useable, whereas a 3D CAD file can be decomposed into a number of 2D images. Extracting these artifacts is useful because there are often times when someone wants to review part of say, a CAD file, but doesn’t have that particular CAD software on their computer, or tablet: with Istari Digital, that same person can now view a set of images that were derived from that CAD file, add comments to those images, share them with other people, and invite them to comment on the image all without needing to have that CAD software on their computer and learn how to use it.
Key Terminology
There are some terms-of-art that are useful to know:
- Model: this is any file that’s uploaded to Istari Digital
- Derived Artifacts: Some models (but not all) can be decomposed (a CAD file can be decomposed into a set of simple .jpg images), and the decomposed images are called Derived Artifacts since they are derived from another file
- Artifacts: this is a file that’s uploaded to Istari Digital that cannot be decomposed further, for example, a .jpg image file
