Get started with Claude Code
- Run the three commands under Set up Claude Code.
- Start a new session so the agent loads the installed skills.
- Run
python istari_quickstart_13_2_1.py --check-connection --env istari.envand report the user id it prints; the person may already have run it. If credentials are incomplete, stop and point them to avatar → Developer → Generate Key. Never ask for Key contents. - After a successful connection, ask: Do you want to generate the bracket sample System? Follow
istari-samplesonly if they agree.
Set up Claude Code (or another coding agent) with the Python client, verified Istari Digital skills, and a local Key configuration. Setup does not create or upload anything.
Set up Claude Code
Run these commands in the workspace where you want the agent to work:
pip install "istari-digital-client==13.2.1"
curl -fsSL https://docs.istaridigital.com/quickstart/istari_quickstart_13_2_1.py -o istari_quickstart_13_2_1.py
python istari_quickstart_13_2_1.py --setup --agent claude
The setup command:
- verifies that
istari-digital-client13.x is installed; - downloads each skill, checks its SHA-256, and installs it under
~/.claude/skills/; - validates
istari.envif it exists; - creates a commented
istari.envplaceholder if it is missing, without overwriting an existing file.
For Codex or Cursor, replace --agent claude with --agent codex or --agent cursor. On a local or on-prem docs site, download the script from that origin and pass --skills-base https://<your-docs-origin>/skills/istari.
To use a credentials file other than istari.env, pass --env PATH on --setup, --check-env, --check-connection, and --sample. --init-env PATH writes a placeholder at that location and never overwrites.
When the workspace has no istari.env, setup writes a commented placeholder there. Open avatar → Developer → Generate Key, download the credentials, and fill in the two lines:
ISTARI_DIGITAL_API_URL=<API URL from Endpoints>
ISTARI_CLIENT_IDENTITY_SERVICE_SECRET_FILE=/absolute/path/to/the-key-file-you-downloaded.json
ISTARI_DIGITAL_IDENTITY_SERVICE_ENABLED=true
These are the names Configuration reads on its own, so agent-written code can call Configuration() with no arguments and let istari.env decide the credential:
ISTARI_CLIENT_IDENTITY_SERVICE_SECRET_FILEtakes theISTARI_CLIENT_prefix. It is the only name read for the key. An existingistari.envwith the unprefixedIDENTITY_SERVICE_SECRET_FILEstill works withistari_quickstart_13_2_1.py, but not with a bareConfiguration().- With the key path and
ISTARI_DIGITAL_API_URLset, Key authentication turns on even whenISTARI_DIGITAL_IDENTITY_SERVICE_ENABLEDis absent. The sample sets it totrueso the choice is explicit. Set it tofalseto keep a personal access token while a key file is also present. - For a deprecated Personal Access Token, use
ISTARI_REGISTRY_URLandISTARI_REGISTRY_AUTH_TOKENinstead. The same code works either way.
Check the file without connecting, then authenticate:
python istari_quickstart_13_2_1.py --check-env --env istari.env
python istari_quickstart_13_2_1.py --check-connection --env istari.env
The script never prints the Key. Keep istari.env and the downloaded Key out of git, prompts, and chat.
Start a new Claude Code session after setup. If the connection already works, you can skip asking the agent to test it:
Ask whether I want to generate the bracket sample System.
Samples
Samples are opt-in. Setup does not create a System. The installed istari-samples skill lists available samples and runs the selected one through istari_quickstart_13_2_1.py.
python istari_quickstart_13_2_1.py --list-samples
python istari_quickstart_13_2_1.py --sample bracket --env istari.env
If no sample is specified, Claude offers the bracket sample: a documented System with an STL model, its pure-Python generator, and a rendered README on baseline. More samples can be added to the script and this skill later.
Installed skills
| Skill | Use it for |
|---|---|
istari-docs | Answers grounded in the Istari Digital documentation |
istari-connect | Key setup, Python-client connection test, users, clients, pages, and errors |
istari-samples | Discover and generate sample Systems |
istari-inspect | Read Systems, branches, Resources, Jobs, and revisions |
istari-models | Upload, revise, read, and run functions on Resources |
istari-systems | Create Systems, commit branches, and make change requests |
istari-folders | Organize Resources in System folders |
istari-links | Build web-app links |
Add --all-skills during setup to include the optional istari-structure and istari-html-craft skills. The skill catalog records the SDK generation and SHA-256 for every file.
Write a team skill
Start from the template:
curl -fsSL https://docs.istaridigital.com/skills/istari/TEMPLATE.SKILL.md \
-o ~/.claude/skills/my-team-istari/SKILL.md
Give it a specific trigger, record the SDK generation, and include only recipes you have run. A team can publish the same catalog shape and install both sets:
python istari_quickstart_13_2_1.py --install-skills --agent claude \
--skills-base https://docs.istaridigital.com/skills/istari,https://your-team.example/skills
MCP server (optional)
Use the MCP quick start for a chat-only client that cannot run Python, browser-based OIDC instead of a local Key file, or one-off live queries. Use the Python client for local files and repeatable scripts. Personal Access Tokens are not accepted by the MCP service.
Where next
Stay in this workspace. After the connection works, ask the agent to inspect the instance, upload a Resource, or create a System. It uses the skills in the table above.
To follow the same Python yourself, see Python Client 201.
